HILLSBOROUGH: Original 1860s map given to township

Three daughters of former Wertsville Road farmer Russell Everett Hill Jr. and his wife, Myrtle Ann, donated an original 1860 farm map of “Hillsboro” Township to the township government Tuesday night.
Historic Preservation Commission Chairman Greg Gillette said the maps are rare; the township has one, as does Rutgers University, he said. The map — a copy of which hangs in the historical display area at the foyer of town hall — shows no modern-day highways and no railroads, even though there were four in the township at one time, he said.
Mayor Frank Delcore said the map will be displayed in the municipal building.
The three sisters, Joann Bullock, Jennifer Smith and Janice VanDerveer, said the map had been in their father’s office and they decided to give it for public enjoyment.
