HILLSBOROUGH: Volunteers help clear trails of storm debris

More than 10 weeks following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, the Somerset County Park Commission Rangers and the Volunteer Park Patrol have completed the cleanup of nearly 20 miles of trails in the Sourland Mountain Preserve and Washington Valley Park.
“Without the help of JORBA (Jersey Off Road Bicycling Association), we would not even be able to estimate a completion date,” said Dave Dendler, manager of the park rangers. “Thanks to their volunteer efforts, the trails are open and safe for all to use.”
The Volunteer Park Patrol is a group of volunteers who assist visitors through trail patrols and maintaining trails in the park and preserve.
Following the hurricane, representatives of JORBA called Mr. Dendler to offer help in reopening the trail system. Over the course of the past two months, teams of volunteers worked with the rangers every weekend that they were on site at the two facilities. “JORBA and others saved us an amazing amount of time and money recovering from Sandy. Everyone from the commissioners to the rangers thank them for their efforts,” said Mr. Dendler.
