In the days and weeks following Superstorm Sandy, third-grader Kendall Kowitski heard the Public Service Electric & Gas utility roundly criticized for its response to the downed trees that cut electric service to thousands of homes across the state.
Kendall’s home on Walnut Grove Road was fortunate to be powered by a generator, and the family invited people without electricity to share their home, she said.
Still, she said she saw PSE&G workers doing a lot of work to restore power and didn’t think it was quite fair for the utility to suffer all the negative comments.
So, when power was restored and school was back in session, she suggested to her teacher, Susan Olbrys, that the school could send PSE&G a thank-you card.
It turned into a bit of a family activity. Kendall, 11-year-old sister Ave and their dad, Andrew, worked to draw and compose the three-foot high card. Their mother, Jennifer, contacted PSE&G.
About 400 students and staffers at Woods Road School (grades K-3) signed the card.
On Jan. 17, PSE&G regional communications director Eileen Leahey came to accept the card and tell the students how grateful she and the company were to receive it.
