Vincent M. DeVictoria, 28, of Lawrence Road, has been charged with more than a dozen offenses, including eluding police, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and driving under the influence after he led police on a chase on Princeton Pike that reached 70 miles per hour, said police Lt. Mark Ubry.
The chase began when a Trenton resident called the Lawrence Township Police Department around 3 a.m. Jan. 19 to report that he was following a car whose driver had attempted to break into his home on Indiana Avenue, just across the Lawrence/Trenton border, Lt. Ubry said.
The caller continued to give police updates on the man’s location. Police saw two cars that were stopped for the traffic light on Gedney Road and Princeton Pike, and blocked Mr. DeVictoria’s car with a patrol car. The officers got out of the patrol cars and ordered him to out of his car.
But Mr. DeVictoria ignored the police officers’ demand and drove off on Princeton Pike southbound, reaching speeds of 70 miles per hour, Lt. Ubry said. He repeatedly tapped his brakes in an effort to cause an accident for the police car that was following him.
During the chase, he suddenly decelerated and forced a police car to swerve to avoid striking his car. The police car pulled up alongside of him, and he opened his car door into the side of the patrol car.
Police eventually forced Mr. DeVictoria to stop. Three police officers reached into the car and pulled him out of the driver’s side window. He continued to struggle on the ground, until the officers were able to subdue him, Lt. Ubry said.
Once Mr. DeVictoria’s car was stopped, investigating officers discovered three baggies of crack cocaine and a scouring pad used to hold it inside the pipe bowl. They also found a multi-tool wrench and flashlight and a stolen debit card.
In addition to the other charges, Mr. DeVictoria was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of burglar’s tools, criminal mischief, driving under the influence in a school zone, reckless driving, failure to stop for an emergency vehicle, aggravated assault with a weapon and obstruction of the administration of law.
Mr. DeVictoria was taken to the Mercer County Corrections Center on $102,150 bail.
