BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP: Sixth-graders deliver patriotic music for veterans

By Jen Samuel, Managing Editor
BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP – Ellen Kirk, director of vocal music at Bordentown Regional Middle School, organized a concert in January honoring America the beautiful.
The mini-musical on Jan. 25 was titled "AMERICANS WE" and featured the singing of sixth graders studying general music.
"I have felt that today’s students do not have familiarity with patriotic songs," Ms. Kirk told the Register-News. "To encourage them to learn the songs for a ‘reason,’ I told them that we would be putting a program together and inviting parents and local veterans to attend.
"We talked about the brave men and women who have served our country in the past and present. Students were anxious to share stories of family members and several students invited family members to attend," she said. "My students put on a great show that was enjoyed by all. The honored guests were very impressed."
Of the event, Ms. Kirk said, "The musical was filled with patriotic songs old and new, with readings in between songs. There were solo singers, solo readers, and solo instrumentalists – all sixth grade BRMS students."
She continued, "It was very well received by everyone, but I think that our veterans enjoyed it most. Many students commented that the men smiled during the entire show!"
