South Brunswick High School’s Student Council is hosting a Teens for Jeans drive until Feb. 10 according to Student Council Advisor Kelly Boyer.
All South Brunswick community members and SBHS students are welcome to donate.
Teens for Jeans is sponsored by the national program dosomething.org and the clothing store Aeropostale.
”The program for the collection is called dosomething.org,” Ms. Boyer said. “Dosomething.org is a leadership group that contacts young student leaders in their communities.”
This is the sixth annual Teens for Jeans drive according to the Teens for Jeans informational flyer. During the last five years, the Teens for Jeans drive has collected and donated more than 2.5 million pairs of jeans, according to the organization.
According to Mrs. Boyer, senior and Student Council President Tessa Trach connected with the organization so SBHS could participate in the Teens for Jeans drive this year.
Ms. Boyer said that jeans are the number one requested article of clothing from homeless teenagers.
Student Council has been collecting jeans since Jan. 14 and received approximately a couple hundred of pairs, according to Mrs. Boyer.
”We have only collected a couple hundred which is not that great because we wanted to collect 5,000-6,000 pairs,” Mrs. Boyer said.
Student Council has advertised the Teens for Jeans drive on bulletin boards, VTN, and posters. Ms. Boyer said the drive has also been promoted on Twitter and Facebook.
Jeans can be dropped off at SBHS’ Main Office, Activities Office, or Athletic Office.
On Feb. 10, Ms. Boyer said she would be delivering all the jeans collected to the Aeropostale in Quakerbridge Mall.
Although Feb. 9-10 fall on the weekend, those willing to donate their denim jeans to Teens for Jeans can bring their donations directly to the Aeropostale in Quakerbridge Mall according to Ms. Boyer.
Ms. Boyer said that SBHS has the opportunity to win prizes for collecting and donating the jeans to Aeropostale.
The grand prizes include a pizza party for the whole school, SBHS hoodies made by Aeropostale, and a monetary grant.
”I feel like it is an easy opportunity to clean out closets and make room for the next season’s clothes,” Ms. Boyer said.
