Avoid driving if storm materializes

DRJTBC warning

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission today urged motorists

to refrain from driving if possible should a predicted snowstorm hit the agency’s

Pennsylvania-New Jersey service area Friday into Saturday.

“The current projections are for anywhere from four to eight inches of snow and maybe some

ice to hit our region over the next 48 hours,” said Arnold J. Conoline, the Commission’s

acting executive director. “The best advice we can give motorists is to refrain from driving if

at all possible should this snowstorm materialize and dump the snow amounts that are

currently being predicted.”

For motorists who must travel in the storm, the Commission has created a new informational

webpage called Winter Travel Safety, which may be found in the News and Travel section of

the agency’s website –

www.drjtbc.org.

The webpage consists of fact sheets such as winter driving tips, sharing the road with a plow

and salt trucks, why bridges freeze before roadways, and how the Commission mobilizes for

winter storms. The page also features a copy of the AAA informational brochure called How

to Go on Ice and Snow.

Conoline said Commission work crews spent Thursday gearing up for the approaching storm

at the agency’s seven maintenance facilities. If the storm hits, Conoline said motorists who

find themselves driving in snow can do their part by slowing down, giving themselves

additional time to reach their destinations, allowing more distance between vehicles, and

remembering that bridges freeze before roadways.
