Sarah Bier of Milltown has for the past two years found herself the youngest participant in the New Jersey Half Marathon events, held each May in Long Branch.
This year will be no different, as the 10-year-old, her siblings and parents will again run to raise money for the Central New Jersey Brain Tumor Support Group, a cause that the family holds close to their hearts.
Sarah’s father, David, is a brain tumor survivor, having beaten the odds since being diagnosed with stage 3 cancer in 2002.
But Sarah, the youngest of the three Bier children, has found another way to support the cause. Her dance company, Star Essence, of Edison, is competing in The Power of Dance competition, where teams compete to receive up to $5,000 for their chosen charity. Star Essence’s competition team, the Luminous Dance Ensemble, is competing on behalf of the Central New Jersey Brain Tumor Support Group.
As part of this effort, the dancers will host a Flapjack Fundraiser on Feb. 17 from 8 to 10 a.m. at Applebee’s, 251 Woodbridge Center Drive, Woodbridge. The dancers, as well as Sarah’s parents David and Diane, will be among the servers
The cost is $12 per person, and the meal includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and a beverage. The troupe will also be coordinating raffles and a 50/50 at the event. Tickets for the Flapjack Fundraiser may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 732-512- 1550.
Supporters are also welcome to order the Star Essence Dance for a Cure “Gray Matter Matters” T-shirt, which is $20, with all proceeds going to the brain tumor support group.
The shirts can be picked up at the breakfast or elsewhere.
