MARLBORO — The Solomon Schechter Day School in Marlboro will receive an award from the American Red Cross in recognition of the school’s superstorm Sandy “For the Kids Toy, Book and School Supply Drive.”
According to a press release, the school community collected books, toys and school supplies for children who were affected by the October storm.
“To think there are children in our community who have lost everything is overwhelming. We hope by distributing familiar toys, books and school supplies, the children will begin to feel a sense of comfort as they try to put their lives back together,” said Yoti Yarhi, head of school.
More than 20 students and teachers volunteered to accept the collections at the school on Nov. 6. Although the school itself did not have power, the volunteers, bundled in coats and gloves, and nourished with snacks, never complained as they unloaded car after car of donations.
Many people who came to donate said they were looking for a way to make a contribution to the victims of the storm, according to the press release.
The school community rallied to fill three trucks with donations. Mike Grieco, the owner of Cat Limousines, Freehold, donated his time and vehicles to pick up and deliver the supplies.
