LAMBERTVILLE — The Lambertville Elks Lodge has honored a local Boy Scout troop for its assistance with an effort to help victims of Hurricane Sandy and with other community service projects with which the Elks are involved.
At a recent meeting of Lambertville Elks Lodge 1070, according to Elks member Monica Hood, Thomas Hood (the lodge’s Exalted Ruler and Ms. Hood’s husband), Mr. Hood presented the Lodge’s Certificate of Appreciation and Local Hero Recognition to Boy Scout Troop 49.
Accepting the award was Scoutmaster Kent Carpenter.
”We wanted to recognize the Scouts for the fine work they’ve done with us on Operation Friends, an effort to help victims of Hurricane Sandy, and for other projects the Scouts have helped us on,” Ms. Hood said.
Operation Friends has been collecting new clothing, personal items and toys for Sandy victims.
”It’s a community-wide effort to collect boxed donations for children and their families who need help recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy,” Ms. Hood said.
She added that anyone who wants to help victims can contribute by filling corrugated 16-by-16-by-16-inch cardboard boxes with new clothing, toys and school supplies.
Suggested items for school-age boys and girls include outfits, shoes, boots, underwear, sweatshirts, blankets, backpacks, pillows, etc.
. Boxes can be dropped off at Hood Floors, Route 179, Lambertville.
In addition to Operation Friends, the troop has worked on lots of other worthwhile projects, Among them are, according to Ms. Hood, a Flag Day ceremony, an essay contest with the National Anthem as a subject, and the Hoop Shoot, a basketball shooting contest.
