HIGHTSTOWN – Last night fuel from a residential tank leaked into the Peddie Lake.
A pungent smell filled the borough Feb. 14 after sunset.
Hightstown firefighters responded to the area at 6:45 p.m. and began investigating near the Hightstown Memorial Library, located in the the heart of the borough next to the Peddie Lake.
East Windsor Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 fighters assisted Hightstown Engine Co. No. 1.
A Hazardous Materials Team from Hamilton Township arrived at approximately 7 p.m.
Linked filters were placed by firefighters to skim petroleum from the water.
Concerned residents on Hutchinson Street were told by emergency personnel that fighterfighters were investigating the source of the leak.
Fire Chief Larry Van Kirk told the Herald Friday that the leak came from a tank at 132 Franklin Street.
It was unclear as of this report how much fuel had been leaked.
Chief Van Kirk said, " Right now it is in the hands of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection."
