New Brunswick, NJ – On Thursday, January 31, 2013, Noor-Ul-Iman (NUI) School’s Mock Trial team won its third Middlesex County Championship by defeating the North Brunswick School team in the County Finals at the Middlesex County Court House in New Brunswick. The NUI team then went on to win both rounds of the Regional semifinals on February 7th at the New Jersey Law Center.
In round one of the Regionals, Network of Independent Christian Home Educators (NICHE) of Burlington County defeated Voorhees of Hunterdon County; Noor-Ul-Iman of Middlesex County defeated Mt. St. Mary of Somerset County; and Princeton Day School of Mercer County defeated Oratory Prep of Union County.
In round two of the Regionals, NICHE defeated Colts Neck of Monmouth County, and Noor-Ul-Iman defeated Princeton Day School. As two of the last six teams remaining in the state competition, NICHE and Noor-Ul-Iman will return to the New Jersey Law Center on February 27th for the Central Regional playoffs.
The members of the NUI Mock Trial team are:  Ameena Soliman (captain and attorney); Hasnaa Esseghir (attorney); Aaminah B’hat, Maryam Rostoum, Iman Soliman, Ayesha Durrani, Salma Elkholy and Ayesha Qureshi (witnesses). The attorney coaches of the team are: Norman Epting, Esq., and Ahmad Aboelezz, Esq. The teacher coaches are:   Sufia Azmat, Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed and Aysha Azmat.
Noor-Ul-Iman School also won the Middlesex County Mock Trial Championship in 2006 and 2011. The school finished runners up on five other occasions.  NUI has been competing in the Mock Trial competition for the last ten years.
The competition is an excellent educational tool as it demands the use of a variety of skills such as critical thinking and communication. It gives the students a better understanding of the law and its application in day-to-day life. It also gives the students a chance for an inside look at court proceedings.
