MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP— An Allentown woman died Monday when the car she was riding in left the roadway and collided with a utility pole.
Karen Olsen, 70, had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported from the scene of the 10:58 a.m. crash to Community Medical Center, Whiting, with severe head trauma, local police reported. She was airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, but was pronounced dead at the medical center.
Her husband, Robert S. Olsen, 70, was also airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical Center for chest injuries. He remains there in stable condition, according to the police report.
Police said Mr. Olsen was the driver of the 2012 silver Jeep Liberty and Mrs. Olsen the passenger. They were traveling south on county Route 539 near Roosevelt Boulevard in the Whiting section of the township when the accident happened. Police said both Olsens were properly restrained.
The Olsen’s dog was also a passenger in the car, police reported. It suffered severe back and leg injuries and was taken by Manchester Animal Control to Ocean County Veterinarian where it was euthanized, police said.
Capt. Lisa Parker of the Manchester police said Tuesday that no cause has been established for the accident, but it remains under investigation by the traffic safety section of the Manchester Police Department.
