Nancy Pinkin, a township councilwoman in East Brunswick, has announced that she intends to run in the Democratic primary for the 18th District Assembly seat.
The 18th Legislative District includes several Middlesex County communities, including Edison, Metuchen, East Brunswick, Helmetta, South Plainfield, South River and Spotswood.
Assemblyman Peter Barnes III (D-Middlesex) has said he intends to seek the Senate seat of state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-18th District), who is pursuing the Democratic nomination for governor.
Brandon M. Goldberg, Barnes’ chief of staff, confirmed that the Democratic 18th District Committee will meet on March 19 to elect Democratic candidates for the Nov. 5 election.
In a statement, Pinkin, with the endorsement of the East Brunswick Democratic Committee, pointed to her previous experience in government.
“I have worked in all phases of business and government, including finance, personnel, facilities, planning and budget,” Pinkin wrote. “This experience has trained me to get the highest quality at the least cost, providing vital services and building our future, with a conservative approach to cost and a commitment to lowering taxes.”
She also referenced her role in keeping taxes in check in East Brunswick, streamlining departments, and maintaining programs, such as the library, senior services, recreation programs and parks.
Pinkin, a healthcare and nonprofit consultant, is the council’s longest-serving member, having been elected councilwoman first in 2004 and again in 2008 and 2012.
She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University, a master’s degree in public administration and health from New York University, received a postgraduate fellowship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey for health policy and research, and is a Leadership New Jersey graduate.
She has lived in East Brunswick for nearly 25 years, and has at times served as Township Council president.
Pinkin has also served on the East Brunswick Planning Board, Recreation and Parks Advisory Board, Environmental Commission and Cable Commission.
