HILLSBOROUGH: Kids are challenged to enter tech events at library

   Youngsters in grades 6-12 can help celebrate Teen Tech Week in March by participating in a teen photography contest.
   Demonstrate tech savvy by submitting one photo that has been manipulated using any photo-editing app. Photos will be displayed in the library and voted upon by patrons. Prizes will be awarded.
   The contest runs from March 1-28. Visit the Teen Center at the Hillsborough library for details, or stop by or call the Children’s Desk.
      Kids in grades 2 to 5 are invited to take the Critical Thinking Challenge on Saturday, March 2, at 2 p.m.
   Get involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) events during Technology Innovation Week. Eye Level Learning Center of Hillsborough will host this event. “Think outside the box” through a series of fun brain teasers with emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking. Prizes will be awarded.
   Summer teen volunteer program sign-ups begin March 1. Students entering grades 8-12 in the fall can earn community service hours this summer. Applications and information will be available in the Teen Center starting March 1 and are due no later than Saturday, April 27.
      Adult programs (registration required):
   • In the month of February, the library is displaying American wildlife art from the collection of Michael Hollmann.
   • Monday Morning Moms (for parents/caregivers) — Different topics of discussion along with recommended resources. March 4 at 10 a.m.
   • A mixed-gender ESL conversation group, sponsored by Somerset County Literacy Volunteers, meets Mondays, Feb. 25 and March 4, at 7 p.m. You must know basic English. The program runs through May.
   • A six-week series of dance-fitness Zumba classes will wind up at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the library, 379 South Branch Road. Bring water and wear comfortable clothing.
   • Genetic genealogy and personal genomics – Walter Choroszewski shares his personal experiences using DNA testing for genealogy and medical purposes. As a former science educator he will help unravel the acronyms and terms associated with DNA. He will review companies offering DNA testing and show you how to use this tool to discover the treasures hidden in your own DNA. Tues., Feb. 26, at 7 p.m.
   • Friday night movie — Oscar-nominated “Argo,” starring Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston and John Goodman, and rated R, will be shown March 1 at 7 p.m.
   • Health Insurance 101 — Katherine Woodfield Hermes, a health insurance consumer advocate, will present a program about health care reform, insurance exchanges and the Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act. Mon., March 4, at 7 p.m.
   • Job search program — Learn how to write and/or refine a resume and cover letter. Bring your current resume/cover letter copies to work on. Presented by Lisa Chenofsky Singer, a career management coach. Wed., March 6, at 7 p.m.
   • Hindenburg disaster — Historian Glenn LeBoeuf will talk about research from NASA scientists and charred memos pulled from the rubble of Germany’s bombed cities that tell a far different story about the spectacular destruction of the luxury dirigible in Lakehurst in 1939. Thurs., March 7, at 7 p.m.

  Story & Songs (ages 2-6) — Interactive story time and some musical activities. Fri., Feb. 22, at 10 a.m.
   • SAT practice test (grades 9-12) — Free Kaplan practice test is designed to prepare students. Bring a number-2 pencil, a calculator and a snack (if desired). Sat., Feb. 23, at 9:30 a.m.
   • Lego Club (grades 1-5) — Hang out with other Lego-maniacs and have fun building together. Sat., Feb. 23, at 3 p.m. and Thurs., Feb. 28, at 4 p.m.
   • Lego Buddies (grades 8-12) — Reliable teen volunteers are wanted to provide assistance during Lego Club programs. You must register for each individual session. Volunteers will earn community service hours for attendance. Space limited to four volunteers per session. Sat., Feb. 23, at 2:45 p.m. AND??? Thurs., Feb. 28, at 3:45 p.m.
   • Kindermusik (newborn to 3) — Join Ms. Jenni for music that helps a child develop language, literacy, social and listening skills in a fun, family-friendly setting. Monday, Feb. 25, at 10 a.m.
     • Early Reader Book Club (grades K-2) – Discuss “Put Me in the Zoo” by Robert Lopshire, do some activities and make a craft. Please read the book before the program. Copies will be available at the Children’s Desk. Tues., Feb. 26, at 4 p.m.
      • Preschool Book Club (ages 3-5) — Read books by Doreen Cronin and share book-related activities. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m.
      • Craft for 4’s, 5’s & 6’s — Celebrate Dr. Seuss by making a craft with your preschool or kindergarten child. Thurs., Feb. 28, at 10 a.m.
      • Story & craft (ages 2-6) — Listen to a story by Dr. Seuss and create a craft to take home. Fri., March 1, at 10 or 11 a.m., or Sat., March 2, at 10 a.m.
   • Stories for 4’s, 5’s & 6’s — A fun family storytime on colors. No registration required. Mon., March 4, at 1 p.m.
   • Tail Waggin’ Tutors (grades K-4 only) Each registered child will get 10 special minutes practicing reading skills while Xena, a Therapy Dog International-certified dog, listens. Online registration is not available; call or stop by the Children’s Desk. Arrive early; if you are late, you will lose your spot! Mon., March 4, at 4 p.m.
   • Toddler Time for 2’s and 3’s — Introduce the pleasure of books to your child with stories, songs. No registration is required. The topic for 10 a.m. Tues., March 5, is vehicles.
   • Rhyme Time (newborn to 24 months) — Twenty minutes of nursery rhyme fun. Tues., March 5, at 10:30 a.m.
   • Teen Advisory Board (grades 6-12) — Help plan teen programs and say what you’d like to see happen at the library — while enjoying treats. Attendance counts toward community service hours. Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m.
   • Movin’ Munchkins (ages 3-6) — A creative movement program for child and parent/caregiver! A release/waiver must be signed by the parent or child cannot participate. Forms are available at the Children’s Desk or online. Wed., March 6, at 10 a.m.
      • Afterschool Science — Hands-on fun with the construction science. Grades 3-5 on Wednesday, March 6, at 4:30 p.m. On Thursday, March 7, programs are for ages 4-6 at 10 a.m. and grades K-2 at 4 p.m.
      • Baby Songs (newborn to 24 months) — Spend time making music with your little one! Fri., March 8, at 10 a.m.
   • Special Event: Bricks 4 Kidz — Hands-on classes where the children will build a version of an amusement park carousel swing. Sat., March 9, at 10 a.m. for grades 1-3 and 11:30 a.m. for grades 4-6.
