MILLSTONE: County bridge remains closed

MILLSTONE — A county bridge on Olde Noah Hunt road remains closed while county staff determines what repairs are needed, according to Monmouth County’s director of public information.
The bridge was closed Feb. 13 following the report of a pothole in the bridge approach, Laura Kirkpatrick said Tuesday. After inspection, county staff determined it was a sinkhole and further investigation would be needed.
Because of the depth of the water under the bridge, estimated to be between 5 and 7 feet in a tributary to Doctor’s Creek, a diver was needed to examine the bridge. The diver was expected to conduct the examination on Tuesday, Ms. Kirkpatrick said.
”It may be a ‘scour’ condition,” Ms. Kirkpatrick said, “which is typical of an older bridge over fast-moving water.” The condition could be responsible for undermining of the bridge approach.
Once the determination can be made by county engineers on what repairs are needed, an estimate can be of when the bridge can be reopened, she said.
