SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Senior Center wins national award

The South Brunswick Senior Center won a national award from the National Council on Aging for its “Living Legacies” program, according to a joint press release from the center and the council.
The award was presented as part of NCOA’s National Institute of Senior Centers 2012 Programs of Excellence, according to the release.
The winning program joins seniors and high school students with differing themes each year.
Through working together, the students and seniors develop a theatrical presentation based on the theme, according to the release
The themes include topics like veterans’ stories, immigration or people, places and events in the town’s history.
According to the organization, this year’s theme is “Celebrating Our Cultural Diversity.”
The schools collaborate with the Aging In Place Partnership organization to identify students that may want to participate and then work to bring them together with the seniors regularly on the project.
“We are grateful to receive this recognition award but could not have completed this program each year without the support of Jacque Rubel from Aging in Place and the high school students and teachers they are the ones that make this program come to life,” Director Christine Wildermuth said in the release.
The Senior Center is part of the National Institute of Senior Centers, a national organization comprised of 11,000 centers throughout the country, according to the release.
