TRENTON — Deputy Majority Leader Reed Gusciora (D-Mercer/Hunterdon) is calling for the construction of guardrails along the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath in an effort to lessen potential accidents for pedestrians and cyclists utilizing the path, specifically through the City of Lambertville of Hunterdon County.
”This canal and towpath is used everyday by so many people,” Mr. Gusciora said. “I want to make sure that while it continues being used, we keep people’s safety as a top priority.”
The towpath is part of the Delaware and Raritan State Park, which is operated by the Department of Environmental Protection. The assemblyman expressed his concern for the lack of railings to the Commissioner in a letter sent earlier this week.
”While the towpath is part of a state park that operationally closes at sunset, the path is still accessible and frequently used as a convenient method of travel,” said the assemblyman. “I just feel it’s a matter of safety to have a railing up should there be ice, uneven ground, or someone who simply loses their balance.”
”Unfortunately, we all can remember too well the tragic incident that took the life of a young woman (Sarah Majoras) in Lambertville just a few weeks ago,” concluded Mr. Gusciora. “Moving forward with this preventive measure of installing railings will put the safety and security of all those who use this path first.”
