Middle school pupils to stage ‘High School Musical Jr.’

MARLBORO — Everyone has dreams. Some dream of being the star of the basketball team or science decathlon, others hope to be the lead in the spring musical. What happens when someone wants to do more than one thing?

The audience will have a chance to find out on March 1 and March 2 at 7 p.m. as Marlboro Memorial Middle School students perform Disney’s “High School Musical Jr.” at the middle school on Nolan Road in the Morganville section of the community.

This is the musical’s debut performance in Marlboro, according to information provided by the Marlboro K-8 School District.

The uplifting message is aimed at children of all ages: “Go for your dreams and be who you want to be, despite how others try to confine you.”

More than 40 high-energy and enthusiastic cast members will perform popular, large-scale production numbers such as “Stick to the Status Quo,” “Getcha Head in the Game,” “We’re All in this Together” and many more.

When the Disney Channel movie premiered in 2006 it broke cable television network ratings records and its soundtrack went on to become the best-selling album of the year.

A short time later, Disney Theatrical Productions went to work to adapt “High School Musical” to the stage, attracting a new generation of theater-goers, according to the press release. The stage version became the most licensed new musical in history, with more than 2,500 separate productions worldwide in its first year.

The show is directed and choreographed by teachers John Lissaris, Robin Shatsky and Cassandra Persinger, and the set is designed by teacher Cynthia Hicks and her stage crew of students. Tickets for “High School Musical Jr.” will be $10 at the door.
