Public hearings on South Brunswick’s proposed $48 million budget began Tuesday night.
The series of hearings are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. just before the regular Township Council meetings at the Municipal Building on Route 522.
Chief Financial Officer Joe Monzo told council members Tuesday that changes in some expenses and revenue totaling around $370,000 would trim the anticipated five-cent per $100 of assessed valuation increase down by one-cent with several more hearings to go.
Mayor Frank Gambatese said the council would continue and try to pear down the spending plan.
During the meeting, Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka said the department would be hiring four officer during the next year to replace retiring personnel.
In addition, he also advised replacing several vehicles that were past 100,000 miles.
The township started a rotating replacement program in 1999 after having to replace more than a dozen worn out vehicles.
Since that time, it has tried to incorporate the replacements into each year’s budget to minimize the expense.
