MANVILLE: Making cards is fun — even the guys like it

By Mary Ellen Day, Special to the News
One of the new programs at the Manville Public Library brings people together for service projects to support local organizations.
Monday was one of those programs. Young and old came to make greeting cards for Compassionate Care Hospices, one of which is Branchburg. The cards — made of different colors, designs and shapes — gave the attendees a chance to express their creativeness in cards they said “happy birthday,” “thinking of you,” “just because” and “hello” were some of the greetings used. The cards will be given to Compassionate Care Hospice patients in facilities and homes.
Librarian Nan Peterson organized the project. She said, “We were unexpectedly pleased to see boys come out for this service project. The next time we do this, we would like to see more adults come out and help us as well.”
Nick Scarpulla, a seventh grader at Christ the King School, sat for an hour with friends making cards. He said, “We decided to do something for Lent instead of giving something up.”
For Nick, the service project was twofold. It helped make cards and gave the boys service hours needed for Confirmation.
The boys made as many cards as they could; made 14 himself. Michael had so much fun that jokingly he asked Ms. Peterson if they could come every Monday.
”We plan on doing more service projects in the future,” said Ms. Peterson. To find out about service projects and programs at the library, check the website at www.sclsnj.org or call 908-722-9722.
