MERCER: County announces discount prescription program

Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes, along with the county board of chosen freeholders recently announced a new discount prescription drug program for residents.
Through the program, which is open to all county residents regardless of age or income, users present a card to their pharmacist when filling a prescription and realize savings instantly.
Participants can expect average savings of between 10 and 20 percent on brand drugs or between 20 to 70 percent on generics. The program covers prescription pet medications as well.
The cards can be used at any retail participating county nationwide and have already been mailed to county households.
In a county release Hughes said the program is the result of partnership with ProAct and is encouraging residents to participate.
”In these difficult economic times, especially with the cost of living continuing to increase, this discount program is a welcome benefit for our residents,” Hughes said. “This program is a free and easy way to help our residents keep more of their money in their pockets by helping to reduce the financial burden of their prescription medications”
The program is designed to assist those who either don’t have a prescription drug plan or take prescription medicine not covered by their current insurance plan.
Discount cards cannot be combined with existing health insurance coverage or used to reduce co-pays or with other discount programs. There are no membership fees or enrollment forms to submit and cards are anonymous and cards sent to each household can be used for the entire family.
ProAct is a subsidiary of Kinney Drugs, a New York-based healthcare company. Discounts are made possible through negotiated rates with participating locations.
