Manville recreation girls’ basketball team ended its season 6-3, its first year with a winning record. Last year they fell put up a 4-6 record.
At home on March 2 versus South Bound Brook, pressure from both sides caused multiple turnovers and missed shots. South Bound Brook took over the lead and never looked back, winning 41-29.
At Somerville on March 8, Manville fell behind by 15 points at halftime, pulled within two points with minutes to go. Manville went ahead on a foul shot and held onto the ball to run out the clock and win, 37-36.
Some older Manville players missed the last game which was a makeup on March 9 versus Middlesex Gold at home. The 5th and 6th graders stepped up, showed improved ball-handling skills and impressed playing 7th/8th graders.
Manville held off Middlesex to win, 17-15.
”This was a lot to accomplish with this group since they are comprised of 5th to 8th grades and the other towns are only 7th and 8th grades,” said Coach Pam Mack. “I am glad to have coached the girls again this season and hope to see them all playing at a later date within the school system.”
