MANVILLE: Waitress showed warmth, attention to birthday mom

To the editor:
There are people who make a difference in our lives. Not celebrities, not political or sports figures, not those in the media seeking fame and fortune. Rather, they are everyday people who work hard with little or no recognition, but who make a difference in the lives of those with whom they interact, however briefly.
We met one of those people on Saturday, March 16, at the Hillsborough Star Diner. Ashia was our waitress. When she learned that we were celebrating my mother’s 85th birthday, Ashia made our mother’s birthday experience even more special by the attention, respect and warmth demonstrated in her communication with our Mom, Margaret Huben.
We don’t know how many more birthdays our mother will have to celebrate but we can attest that this one sure was special — birthday cake, candle and song included! As the saying goes, seeing our mother’s surprised and then smiling face when Ashia brought over the cake with the staff singing “Happy Birthday” to her: priceless!
We want to publicly acknowledge how special Ashia is. How she truly made a difference in our mother’s life… and in ours, and certainly deserves recognition and appreciation for doing so.
