HILLSBOROUGH: American stories come alive in folk music

   Folksinger Spook Handy performs live in a “Library After Dark” program on Friday, April 12, at 7 p.m.
   Mr. Handy’s songs come from the giants of folk music and his own original compositions, reflecting the American folk music’s passion, purpose and spirit.
   • The Friends of the Hillsborough Library has daily book and media sales at the library. DVDs, CDs and hardcover books are only $1. Paperbacks, records, children’s books and magazines are only 25 cents. VHS tapes are free.
   During April, get five children’s books for $1.
   • In the foyer in April, view art works of John Perna and Sunitha Somasundaram.
   • The library will be closed Sunday, March 31.
   Adult programs (registration required):
   • Book discussion — First in a series about small business, job searching and career development. Ernesto Sirolli’s “How to Start a Business & Ignite Your Life” provides guidance on how to put together an effective team that allows a business to get off the ground, flourish and grow. Thurs., April 4, at 7 p.m.
   • Friday night movie — “Zero Dark Thirty,” starring Jessica Chastain, will be shown April 5 at 7 p.m.
   • Book discussion — The featured book of the Friends of the Library discussion is “The Forgotten Garden” by Kate Morton. Tues., April 9, at 7:30 p.m.
   Here are programs for youngsters. Registration is required.
   • Stories for 4’s, 5’s & 6’s — A fun family storytime on transportation on Mon., April 1, and on birds on April 8. Both are at 1 p.m. No registration required.
   • Toddler Time for 2’s and 3’s — Introduce the pleasure of books to your child with stories, songs. No registration is required. The topic for Tues., April 2, at 10 a.m. is monkeys.
   • Rhyme Time (newborn to 24 months) — Twenty minutes of nursery rhyme fun. Tues., April 2, at 10:30 a.m.
   • Movin’ Munchkins (ages 3-6) — A creative movement program for child and parent/caregiver. A release must be signed by the parent or child cannot participate. Forms are available at the Children’s Desk or online. Wed., April 3, and Fri., April 12, both at 10 a.m.
   • Science — Hands-on science fun about animals on Wed., April 3, at 4:30 p.m. for grades 3-5; and Thurs., April 4, at 10 a.m. for ages 4, 5 and 6, and at 4 p.m. for K-2.
   • Baby Songs (newborn to 24 months) — Spend time making music with your little one. Older siblings will not be allowed into this program. Fri., April 5, at 10 a.m.
   • Special Storytime (ages 2-6) — A story on fishy fun. Sat., April 6, at 10 a.m.
   • First Look Books (grades 6-12) —Get a sneak peek at new teen titles before they hit the shelves, tell us what you think and take one home. Mon., April 8, at 5 p.m.
   Toddler Time (2 and 3-year-olds) — Introduce books to your child in a story on pigs on Tues., April 9, at 10 a.m.

   Math Matters: Measurement (ages 3-6) — Stories and activities with measurements to get math brains working. Thur., April 11, at 10 a.m.

   • Lego Buddies (grades 8-12) — Reliable teen volunteers are wanted to provide assistance during Lego Club programs. You must register for each individual session. Volunteers will earn community service hours for attendance. Sat., April 13, at 2:45 p.m.
   • Lego Club (grades 1-5) — Hang out with other Lego-maniacs and have fun building together. Sat., April 13, at 3 p.m.
