Armwood succeeds Rafano as Middlesex freeholder

Kenneth Armwood Kenneth Armwood Kenneth Armwood was sworn in as a member of the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders during the board’s regular meeting on March 21.

The longtime Piscataway Township Council member filled the vacancy left by Christopher D. Rafano, who resigned earlier this month after being appointed as a New Jersey Superior Court judge. Rafano, of South River, had served as a freeholder since 1998 and was the board’s director from 2010 until his resignation.

Armwood will fill the remaining nine months of Rafano’s term. He is expected to seek a three-year term in the general election in November. Middlesex County Democratic Committee members elected Armwood to the seat during a March 20 convention.

“I am very excited to join the freeholder board, and I look forward to working with the team to provide the best possible services for the lowest possible costs,” he said.

Armwood, who was expected to resign from his Piscataway council seat as a result of being appointed to the freeholder board, will serve as chairman of the county’s Community Services Committee. The panel oversees numerous programs for human services, housing, homelessness, seniors and disabled residents, the Raritan Bay Mental Health Clinic, the county adjuster, the county clerk and the surrogate’s office.

Armwood is also a member of the Public Safety and Health Committee.

“I am thrilled to welcome Freeholder Armwood to the board and offer him my best wishes for his success,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “Through his years as a councilman in Piscataway, Kenneth Armwood has displayed boundless energy, enthusiasm and compassion. I know he will be an excellent addition to our team and a staunch advocate for the people of Middlesex County.”
