HOPEWELL VALLEY: Required at CHS: Finance or economics course

By John Tredrea, Special Writer
Beginning with members of next year’s senior class (Class of 2014), all students at Hopewell Valley Central High School (CHS) will be required to complete a one-semester course in either financial literacy or economics if they want to graduate.
”This additional course requirement for graduation has been established by the New Jersey Department of Education,” said CHS principal Michael Daher.
”All students must schedule and complete either course prior to graduation from Hopewell Valley Central High School. Again, this is a graduation requirement, beginning with the HVCHS Class of 2014.”
The financial literacy course is being offered through CHS’ business department, Mr. Daher said, while the economics course is offered through the social studies department.
”We will be offering the economics course as a summer school course for any student who wants to complete this graduation requirement prior to the beginning of the 2013-14 school year.
”Although the economics or financial literacy course is a graduation requirement that starts with the Class of 2014, we are offering the economics summer school course to any student enrolled at the high school,” Mr. Daher noted.
The economics course will be taught by a social studies teacher at the high school. The course will be run as both an in-class and online learning class.
The summer school course will run during the month of July, with class meetings on July 8, 15, 22 and 29, from 9 a.m.-noon.
”Students will be required to attend three of the four class sessions,” Mr. Daher said. “All students must attend the first session on July 8.”
The cost for the 2½ credit course in the summer is $260.
Any student interested in taking the summer school economics course should contact his/her school counselor as soon as possible.
The course will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
