MANVILLE: Democrats Jurewicz, Harwick say they’ll file

By Gene Robbins, Managing Editor
Former Borough Councilman Frank Jurewicz and local party chairman Alan Harwick say they’ll run for the two Borough Council seats that come open this year.
However, Mr. Harwick, an attorney, said via email, “The caveat (is) that I may very well withdraw my name and substitute another Democrat to appear on the November ballot. I just started a new business this year, and time constraints may preclude me from running an effective campaign and serving the citizens of Manville.”
The borough website shows Mr. Harwick as a member of the Library Advisory Board and the Board of Health’s attorney.
For the last year, Mr. Juriewicz has chaired the regional Raritan-Millstone Rivers Flood Control Commission, which was organized by nine municipalities and the county in 2012.
Mr. Jurewicz, a system engineer, was on council for two terms in the 1990s and lost a bid for council in 2010. He’s also served multiple terms on the school board. He has been on the Borough Council, Planning Board or Board of Education almost continuously since 1981.
Last week, the Republican organization in the borough endorsed Susan Asher for re-election and preferred former councilman Richard Onderko for the second spot.
In doing so, the local GOP leaders passed over incumbent Lou Petzinger and former councilwoman Sherri Lynn. Ms. Lynn opted not to run for re-election to a second term last year. Mr. Petzinger is in the last year of his first three-year term.
When asked in an email if he might run, he wrote, “I’m still weighing my options.”
The filing deadline for candidates to gain a spot on the primary election ballot is 4 p.m. Monday, April 1.
Mr. Onderko served one three-year term and was defeated in November.
Ms. Asher, first elected to the council in 2001, defeated Mayor Lillian Zusa in the GOP primary for mayor in 2011, then lost to Democrat Angelo Corradino in the fall.
