FAIR HAVEN — Local youngsters will again have the opportunity to learn how to sail this summer with the River Rats, an organization that has been teaching sailing for more than 50 years from its home on the Navesink River.
Those interested should attend the River Rats Open House on April 14 from 1-5 p.m. at the Fair Haven Youth Center, 35 Fisk St.
Also known as the Fair Haven Sailing Club, the River Rats training program teaches youngsters ages 9-16. Training sessions are also held for adults in June.
River Rats trains 90 students each summer in two sessions. Sail training is open to any child who can swim and who wants to learn how to sail. Training is provided by certified instructors who emphasize water safety and an appreciation of the river environment.
Beginner and intermediate classes focus on hands-on sailing techniques. Advanced classes emphasize racing skills and strategies.
Participants do not need to own their own boat to join the classes.
Registration information, fees and session dates are available at www.riverratssailing.org. Registrations can be returned by mail.
