By Naomi Brahinsky
ROOSEVELT ARTS PROJECT TO CELEBRATE 25TH ANNIVERSARY WITH
WEEKEND OF ART, MUSIC, POETRY AND FUN
MAY 4 AND 5
Beginning at 11 AM on Saturday morning May 4 and running through Sunday afternoon May 5, the Roosevelt Arts Project in Roosevelt New Jersey will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a weekend-long series of events.  The weekend’s activities will take place in, around and near the Roosevelt Public School, on route 571, which will be the site of an art show of works by more than 40 artists from Roosevelt’s past and present, including famous historic figures such as Ben Shahn and Jacob Landau to today’s young emerging artists. The art show will be open from 11 AM to 5 PM Saturday and Sunday.
During those hours, the school will host a series of events, including talks, poetry, videos and music featuring Roosevelt’s vibrant arts community.
Events will include musical performances by David Brahinsky, Paul Prestopino, Nancy Hamilton, Chris Martin and others, while poets David Herrstrom, Judith McNally, David Keller and others will read their poetry. Gallery talks will be given on the world-famous Ben Shahn mural in the school lobby, while Ben Johnson’s video on the architecture of Roosevelt will play continuously in a nearby classroom.
Art tables where children can explore their creativity under the leadership of Roosevelt artist and teacher Barbara Atwood will be set up on the school grounds.
Saturday night at 8:30 PM both children and adults will be invited to participate in a sound/light parade beginning in the FDR Amphitheater adjacent to the school. During the afternoon, all interested participants will have the opportunity to construct their own light devices to carry on the parade.
On Sunday afternoon at 3 PM, Roosevelt pianist and composer Alan Mallach will present a piano recital with commentary, featuring the music of prominent American composers of the New Deal era and Roosevelt composers, including Mark Zuckerman, Brad Garton and Laurie Altman. The recital will be held in the Roosevelt Borough Hall, on Route 571, a short walk from the public school.
All events are free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be available throughout the day.
