HILLSBOROUGH: Senior Corner column, issue of May 2

CHAPTER A
   Chapter A’s next meeting is Thursday, June 6. A representative from the Hillsborough Sleep Center will speak on sleep problems.
   Meetings start at 12:30 p.m. all Hillsborough seniors age 60-plus are invited. Dues are $5 a year and new members may join at any meeting. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., allowing time to review upcoming events. Refreshments are served after the meeting.
   Members may at any time contribute kitchen supplies — coffee, decaf, napkins, plastic sandwich bags, etc. Dues are $5 a year.
   We have been encouraged by the township to offer suggestions on how the Senior Room can be used more. Ideas are welcome and should go to our president, Lou Possemato, 908-369-4474.
   Our bulletin board is looking great — lots of good information! Keep up the good work.
   Executive Board meetings are the 4th Wednesday of every month unless otherwise noted. Remember, the suggestion box is available to you. Also, you can dispose of unused prescription drugs at any time in a box in the police department.
   Upcoming events:
   Wed., May 15 — Music of Irving Berlin at the Pines Dinner Theater in Allentown, Pa. Complete lunch served. Depart from Kohl’s parking lot at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $85.
   Mon., June 4 —”Wake Up, Darling” at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse near Clinton. Lunch with buffet dessert bar. Depart from Kohl’s parking lot at 10:15 a.m. Cost is $60.
   Sat., July 13 — Annual anniversary party celebration at Mary, Mother of God Church on South Triangle Road, starting at 11:30 a.m. Appetizers, dinner, music, dancing, prizes. Member cost is $25, refunded at event. Guests are $35, non-refundable.
   Our next trip to the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City is on Monday, May 6. The trip is open to members and non-members (over 21) for $30, with $25 returned. Departs at 9 a.m. from Kohl’s lot and returns at about 7:30 p.m. Call Jo at 908-359-6418 for reservations. Pay on bus.

   Monday: Knitting from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
   Tuesday: Bridge from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
   Wednesday: Canasta from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mah jongg from noon-4 p.m.
   Thursday: Bridge from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
   Friday: Mah jongg from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CHAPTER B
   We are very pleased and thankful to receive a grant award from the Hillsborough Credit Card Committee. The money will purchase a new digital microphone system to use at our meetings. Thank you to that committee and all those who participate in the credit card program.
   The next monthly meeting will be Thursday, May 9, in the all-purpose room in the municipal building. The Rocket/Rockettes will perform a tribute to our veterans. Members should bring their “Shoe Boxes for Veterans.”
   Regular meetings begin at 12:30 p.m. Registration for trips begins at 11 a.m.
   New at May’s meeting: Members wearing their name badges will be eligible for a drawing at the end of the meeting for a special gift. Be sure to wear your badge!

      A day trip to the national Historic Museum in West Orange is planned for Sunday, May 19. This includes a tour of Glenmont Estate of Thomas Edison and his laboratory. Cost for bus, tour and dinner at the famous Essex House is $72. Tickets can be purchased at the meeting.
   A five-day trip to Rocking Horse Ranch in New York State is planned for June 10-14. The trip includes transportation, three daily meals, and day and evening activities, at a cost of $536. Partial payment is due in April.
   A day trip to the Culinary Institute of America is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2. The cost is $85, which includes a tour of the Institute, an Italian dinner and a tour of the nearby Vanderbilt Home Museum, located in the Hyde Park, N.Y., area.
   A day trip to Monmouth Raceway is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 23. The cost is $70, which includes the entrance fee, a program with grandstand seating and dinner at 5:30 p.m. at Basile’s Restaurant in Freehold. You may purchase a ticket beginning at the May meeting on a first-come, first-serve basis.

   May 3 — Quilt display at the Harlingen Reformed Church, Rt. 206, Free admission. 5-9 p.m. Also May 4 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Bring a non-perishable food item for Storm Sandy Relief.
   May 4 — Flea market at Hillsborough Municipal Building, sponsored by Hillsborough Fire Co. No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Call Gail at 908-369-4811 to reserve a table.
   May 16 — Health Fair. More information to follow.
   ’The township’s Mr. Fix-It program, run by the Social Services Department, will arrange minor home repairs on Wednesday mornings between 8 and 11 for Hillsborough seniors 60 and older. Call 908-369-3880 for details.
   Free exercise programs are available for all Hillsborough seniors and are designed for all levels of fitness.
   In the municipal building’s all-purpose room (where clubs A and B meet), there are sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 a.m., and 12:30 and 2 p.m. Stretching and low-impact dancing are included.
   Seniors can “Flex, Stretch, and Tone with Rose” at the Hillsborough Senior Wellness Center, 339 South Branch Road (near the YMCA) at 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call 908-369-8700 for details.

HILLSBOROUGH SENIOR CENTER
   Senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services will observe May as Older Americans’ Month. This year’s theme is “Release the Power of Age.” Programs will showcase the ways older adults contribute to society.
   The wellness center at 339 South Branch Road is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Its phone is 908-369-8700.
   Transportation services are available.
   Enjoy lunch for a suggested donation of $1.50 or more. (Price for guests under 60: $5.35). Call 908-369-8700 before 10:30 a.m. the day before to make a lunch reservation.
