Manville High School Key Club members threw a senior prom Friday night.
It wasn’t for 18-year-olds ready to graduate, but for senior citizens in the community.
The Key Club recreated an image of the days gone by, when the high school gym was decorated and dimly lit for a chance to spend a memorable night clutching on the dance floor.
Bill Forke of Sparx DJ of Manville kept the evening rolling by playing music from the 1950s and ‘60s The bleachers were decorated with cutout music notes, pictures and posters of the Rat Pack and rock ‘n roll stars.
”The kids real enjoy it and it’s a way to for them to give back. Many of these people have a lot of years here and it’s sort of nostalgic for them to come and meet friends in a familiar place,” said club advisor Caroline Galafaro.
Maggie Kloskowski, the club president, said the prom helped the club to serve the community. “That’s what do in the Key Club we give back,” she said.
A buffet meal of pasta, ziti, peppers and meatball donated by Manville Pizza was served, and Key Club members made sure the bread trays were full and water glasses filled throughout the night.
”I’m glad the kids are doing it,” said Theresa Tomasfski of Manville. “Mothers and fathers do things for them all these years and now they are paying back,” he said. “It’s good for seniors to mix with the young people.”
Elias Zareva of Warren said, “This gives young people the opportunity to interact with adults perhaps more than they might otherwise.”
