ALLENTOWN
Narrative: Allentown was settled in 1706 by Nathan Allen, who built three mills along Doctors Creek. The half-mile square borough was officially incorporated from a portion of Upper Freehold Township in 1889. The Allentown Historic District has a stock of historic homes and other buildings, including the 1787 John Imlay House on South Main Street. Allentown was also the site of a Revolutionary War skirmish in 1778 and home to a number of famous people in history, including Dr. William Newell, who was New Jersey governor from 1857-1860 and also served three terms in Congress.
