Former Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan was sworn in on May 6 as an assistant attorney general for the state Office of the Attorney General.
He will serve as counsel to the office’s Division of Criminal Justice, spokesman Paul Loriquet said. Kaplan will handle a “variety of projects,” including coordination efforts between New Jersey’s 21 county prosecutors.
Kaplan’s appointment, which became effective on Monday, comes with a salary of $134,500, Loriquet said.
Kaplan’s term as Middlesex County prosecutor expired Jan. 14, but he remained in a holdover position until this week.
“The Edison Police Department always had a great working relationship with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office under the leadership of Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan,” Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan said. “I appreciate the professionalism and support that Prosecutor Kaplan and his staff have provided, not only to our department but to all municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Middlesex County and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. I wish Prosecutor Kaplan all the best in his new position with the state attorney general.” Gov. James McGreevey appointed Kaplan to the post in 2002. Gov. Jon Corzine reappointed Kaplan to a five-year term in 2008.
Andrew C. Carey, a former federal attorney, will replace Kaplan. He was sworn in May 6 as acting Middlesex County prosecutor, Loriquet said.
Carey will serve as acting prosecutor until he receives official confirmation from the state Senate, Loriquet said.
Prior to this position, Carey worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark, where he served as chief of the narcotics unit and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.
He also worked as an assistant district attorney in the New York District Attorney’s Office.
“I am also looking forward to working with incoming Prosecutor Andrew Carey,” Bryan said.
