NORTH BRUNSWICK — Three miles of deteriorated pavement along Route 27 between North Brunswick and Franklin will be repaved.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that Route 27 will be resurfaced in both directions from the vicinity of Sanford Street to the vicinity of Parillo Drive, where the highway borders Franklin Township in Somerset County to the north and North Brunswick in Middlesex County to the south.
The DOT’s contractor, Schifano Construction, has already begun preliminary construction activities, including site mobilization and sign installation, according to a DOT press release. Initial construction efforts will focus on curb and sidewalk repairs and the installation of new ADA-compliant curb ramps.
The DOT has scheduled construction around peak period travel hours in order to minimize traffic impacts, the DOT said. All work requiring lane closures will be restricted to overnight hours.
In addition, Route 18 in both directions between the NJ Transit railroad bridge in New Brunswick and the existing northern terminus of the highway in Piscataway will be resurfaced.
Also, Route 26 in both directions from the Route 1 interchange to just north of Route 680/Howe Lane will be improved.
Upgraded signage and roadway striping will be provided as needed. Traffic signal modifications and ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades will be included at certain locations. New image-detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors.
The DOT anticipates project completion in the fall.
