Resurfacing of Middlesex County roadways begins

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) will mill and repave deteriorated sections of asphalt and concrete roadway on three different highways in Middlesex and Somerset counties.

The locations are:

 Route 18 in both directions between the NJ Transit railroad bridge in New Brunswick (near milepost 42.6) and the existing northern terminus of the highway in Piscataway (milepost 45.3);

 Route 26 in both directions from the Route 1 interchange (milepost 0) to just north of Route 680/Howe Lane (milepost 1.45) in North Brunswick; and

 Route 27 in both directions from the vicinity of Vliet Road (milepost 8.6) at the border of South Brunswick and Franklin to north of Evelyn Avenue (milepost 10.76) at the border of North Brunswick and Franklin.

The $5.7 million contract will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, vicinity of side streets, ramps and shoulders, according to an April 30 press release from DOT.

The highways will be restriped, and new image-detection cameras will be installed at selected intersections to replace the existing underground loop detectors, according to the DOT.

The work will be performed under the allowable lane closures schedule, maintaining at least one travel lane at each location during peak travel hours. Access to all businesses will be maintained, according to the press release.

All work in the contract is expected to be completed by late fall.
