$85,000 Raised for New Jersey
Healthcare Scholarship Recipients
Lawrenceville, NJ– A group of outstanding New Jerseyans were lauded when the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards® honored physicians and healthcare leaders at its recent black-tie event. These coveted awards are among the highest honors given in New Jersey’s medical community. MDAdvantage®, a leading provider of medical professional liability insurance in New Jersey, sponsors the state’s longest-running medical awards program to recognize New Jersey’s healthcare efforts.
In addition to the awards bestowed upon this year’s honorees, seven New Jersey medical students were selected as recipients of the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Scholarship Fund. This year’s fundraising efforts enabled the Foundation to donate $85,000 to fund medical student scholarships at seven New Jersey medical school, dental school and physician assistant programs. “I am so grateful for the strong support we received this year,” said Patricia A. Costante, Chairman and CEO of MDAdvantage. “In particular, our Scholarship Honor Roll members, including Excellence in Medicine Society member Kern Augustine Conroy & Schoppmann, P.C., really stepped up to the plate and joined MDAdvantage in investing in the future of New Jersey medicine.”

Outstanding Medical Educator Awards:
Nayan Kothari, MD, Chairman, Department of Medicine, Saint Peters University Hospital and Vice President/Chief of Academic Affiliations (interim), Saint Peters Health Care System, and
Carol A. Terregino, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education (interim) and Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Outstanding Medical Executive Award: Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hackensack University Health Network.
Edward J. Ill Physician’s Award®: Robert L. Johnson, MD, The Sharon and Joseph L. Muscarelle Endowed Dean, New Jersey Medical School.
Verice M. Mason Community Service Leader Award: Kathleen Horn, RN, CIC, Director of Infection Prevention, on behalf of the Hunterdon Medical Center Infection Prevention Team.
Outstanding Medical Research Scientist Award for Basic Biomedical Research: Smita S. Patel, PhD, Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Outstanding Medical Research Scientist Award for Clinical Research:
Suhayl Dhib-Jalbut, MD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurology, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Chief, Neurology Service at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Peter W. Rodino, Jr., Citizen’s Award®: Mike Adler and the Adler Aphasia Center, Maywood, NJ.

Ill Excellence in Medicine Foundation, stated, “This year marks the tenth anniversary of MDAdvantage’s sponsorship of the Excellence in Medicine awards program. Patricia Costante and her team have raised the bar on this awards program year after year, and I look forward to watching the program continue to grow in the future, and to provide even greater scholarship support to deserving students in New Jersey.”
The Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2014 awards program. The deadline for submissions is August 16, 2013. Next year will mark an important milestone for the awards program, as it will be the 75th anniversary of the first award given in Dr. Ill’s name.
