EAST BRUNSWICK — East Brunswick Boy Scout Troop No. 223 has announced the advancement of Derek Chen and Justin Moy to the top rank of Eagle Scout.
For his service project, Derek, a senior at East Brunswick High School (EBHS), chose to work with the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission to erect two bat houses in town — one by the skate park and tennis courts, and the other in the wooded area adjacent to Crystal Springs.
With donated supplies from Home Depot, Lowe’s and Route 18 Lumber, Derek led a group of 15 Scouts and parents to accomplish this task.
Derek will begin classes at Rutgers University in the fall, with a major in premed.
Justin, also a senior at EBHS, volunteered to plan and build a circular patio with an elevated stone fire pit at the East Brunswick Memorial VFW Post 133 for use in their flag retirement ceremonies.
Although the VFW had already set aside funding for this project, Justin sought and secured discounts on materials and supplies from Lowe’s, A. Bailes Landscaping and Livingston
Park Nursery to help reduce the cost to the VFW.
He planned and executed the task with the assistance of 29 Scouts, leaders and parents.
As a member of Troop 223, Justin was a participant at many flag retirements and recognized the need for a formal arena to conduct such ceremonies.
Justin will study mechanical engineering at Drexel University in the fall.
The Scouts will be honored at an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony on June 15.
