“An Evening of Handbells” will be presented at 7 p.m. on June 9 at The First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank (Tower Hill), 255 Harding Road. Under the direction of Adam Peithmann, the handbell ringers will perform with two five-octave sets of bronze bells (a total of 127 bells) and four octaves of choir chimes.
Heading the program are 10 Calvin Ringers, who are students at area high schools. The eclectic program will include arrangements of beloved hymn tunes and secular works, such as the theme music from “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Prisms,” a whimsical composition that keeps the ringers in perpetual motion. The flamboyant “Rhythmic Rip,” an avantgarde work that features a percussive drumline, will also be featured. The program will include special appearances by three of the church’s graded handbell choirs.
Founded in 1967, the Calvin Ringers have established a national reputation and toured the U.S., Canada and Europe. Over the years, they have performed at the White House, Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Crystal Cathedral, Rockefeller Center and New York’s South Street Seaport.
The concert is free, but an offering will be taken to offset expenses of the ringers’ 2013 summer tour, which will include performances at Walt Disney World and Winter Park Presbyterian Church, both in Florida.
The church is accessible to persons with disabilities. For more information on Tower Hill’s concert series events, visit the website towerhillchurch.org or call 732-747-1348.
