SOUTH BRUNSWICK — It will be a busy day in South Brunswick on June 1.

The 15th annual Pedals for Progress — Bicycle & Sewing Machine Collection has partnered with the third annual Education Foundation’s Tour de South Brunswick — Bike Ride & Fun Walk.

For this year’s Pedals for Progress, “We are holding both events on the same day and are combining our efforts to publicize the events,” said Devon Smith, second-grade teacher at Constable Elementary School.

Pedals for Progress is kicking off events from noon to 3 p.m., rain or shine, in the gym parking lot at South Brunswick High School, 750 Ridge Road.

The event, sponsored by the South Brunswick Education Association, collects used sewing machines, soccer equipment and bicycles of all sizes, which are then sent to developing nations.

Smith said members are asking for a minimum of $10 donation per item to help with shipping costs. Tax receipts will be provided.

Smith said it was important to note that the Pedals for Progress main office in High Bridge suffered a great deal of damage during superstorm Sandy.

The Tour de South Brunswick is a bicycle ride fundraiser for the Education Foundation of South Brunswick Township Inc., which is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that funds programs for South Brunswick public school students.

The ride features three routes — a 4- mile family fun ride through a local neighborhood, a 10-mile fun ride through Dayton and Monmouth Junction, and a 25-mile Tour de South Brunswick throughout all areas of the township.

Registration and check-in will begin at 8 a.m. The ride starts at 9 a.m.

Anyone who donates to Pedals for Progress can get $5 off their registration for the Tour de South Brunswick.

Participants can also join a Family Fun Detective Walk, where families can enjoy a casual walk through a local neighborhood while searching for various sites. This will start at 9:15 a.m.
