HILLSBOROUGH: Township authorizes its biannual dog canvass

You may greet a survey taker at your door

Dog owners will be paid a visit this summer, as Hillsborough Township conducts its annual dog license canvassing until Aug. 15.
Four part-time employees will go door-to-door asking residents, “Do you have a dog?” Owners of non-licensed dogs will receive information about how to register their canine companion. If a resident is not home, information about proper registration will be left.
New Jersey state law requires townships to conduct dog canvassing every two years. State law mandates all dogs, seven months or older, to be licensed annually.
Residents can register a dog for $21. Unvaccinated dogs can be registered for $24. Hillsborough Township’s dog licensing fees go towards St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center and the canvassing process.
The township employs dog canvassers for $10 per hour and the supervisor receives $12 per hour. Canvassers will work about 30 to 35 hours per week.
