Police say a gas station attendant at the Valero station on Route 130 went too far in trying to get the name and phone number of a young woman last week.
Singh Sumit was arrested at the station and charged with harassment at 12:35 p.m. last Friday, according to police.
Police said that Mr. Sumit was pumping gas into the vehicle of a teenage female at the station.
After filling the tank, police said that Mr. Sumit took money from the female and asked her if she went to nightclubs and if she would go with him.
The female said no and asked for her change.
Mr. Sumit then allegedly refused to giver her the change until she gave him her name and phone number.
Police said the female provided him with a false name and number on a piece of paper, hoping to then get her change and leave the station.
Mr. Sumit, however, allegedly asked to see her driver’s license to verify the information.
She refused and then Mr. Sumit gave her the change from the transaction, according to police.
The female then left the station and called police.
Detective Ken Herman went to the station, where Mr. Sumit also lives, and found the piece of paper with the fake name and number still in Mr. Sumit’s pocket, according to police.
Mr. Sumit reportedly told Detective Herman that he had done the same thing to approximately 20 other female customers of the station.
According to police, Mr. Sumit said he works so many hours at the station that it was the only way for him to meet women.
Mr. Sumit was charged with one count of harassment and was released on a summons, according to police.
Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka is asking any other women that may have been harassed by Mr. Sumit to contact Detective Herman at 732-329-4648.
”We will aggressively look to stop this conduct at any business in our community,” Chief Hayducka said. “I ask other woman to have the courage to come forward like this young woman.”
