The third annual “Tour de South Brunswick,” the Education Foundation of South Brunswick’s annual fundraiser was a big success according to organizer and foundation member Martin Abschutz.
”This was a great idea for a community event,” Mr. Abschutz, a former Board of Education member said. “It gave local bicycle enthusiasts a chance to participate and keep things local, as all events were totally within South Brunswick Township.”
Mr. Abschutz said 10 riders participated in the 25-mile endurance ride, which traveled around every area of the township.
Twenty-two riders tried the shorter 10-mile course, and 11 riders tried the beginner level four-mile route.
”This year’s event drew a 215 percent increase (in riders) over last year,” Mr. Abschutz said. “A bigger event is already being planned for next year.”
The preliminary numbers also showed that donations have topped $1,180, he said.
According to its website, the non-profit foundation’s mission is “to promote and provide educational support and opportunities through innovative programs and projects.”
Last year the foundation provided some $9,000 in grants and a total of $24,000 in funding since 2011, according to the organization.
