Reading clubs and special programs are on the schedule

Yes there will be a summer reading program at the Manville Public Library — with a twist.
Manville gave up its independent status and joined the Somerset County system this year.
Ruth Bielanski, who has run the summer reading program for many years, said, “The summer reading program is just going to be run a little differently this year. It is different in the way that we don’t gather as a group like I used to have. They basically just read on their own. Just like before, they keep track of their own minutes.”
The theme is “Dig Into Reading” for grades K-5; “Beneath the Surface” for grades 6-12 and “Break Ground” for the adults.
The children will come in and register and they will get two raffle tickets for prizes that will be drawn every couple of weeks. After reading the books, they will record their minutes at home. When they reach a certain point, they will receive a prize. The more they read, the more prizes the will earn.
The program begins on June 17 and goes to Sept. 4. Besides the reading, there are some other special programs scheduled, too:
June 15: School’s Out Party;
June 21: Days of Knights;
June 25; Chess tournament;
July 11: Origami workshop;
July 15: Find the Pharaoh craft;
July 17: Chess tournament;
Aug. 7: Science Tellers;
Aug. 12: Butterfly Guy;
Aug. 15: Chess tournament, and
Aug. 20: Leaf print frame craft.
Preschool to grade 2 can also participate and they will have their own special programs. They will design a construction hat on July 18 and have songs for children with Kurt Gallagher on July 23.
For the older kids in grades 6-12 they will have a kickoff “schools out” party of laser tag on June 15. There will be a gaming truck Games2U and a pie-eating contest. Chess tournaments will be held on June 25, July 17 and Aug. 15. There will be a Berry Yummy-making summer treat on July 10 and a teen craft making Mason jar candle on July 24.
Teens can also have a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 2 by signing up for the Virtual Online Club or at the library and reading. Registration begins June 17. The program will end with a party on Aug. 28 for all ages to say farewell to the summer.
”It will keep kids busy all summer,” said Ms. Bielanski.
If you can’t physically get to the library because you are away on vacation, you can do it on the computer as a virtual program. All of the Somerset County libraries are doing the program so you can also go and switch to other locations.
Registration is required for all the summer programs and can be done online at www.sclsnj.org or in person at the Manville Public Library at 100 South 10th Ave.
