EAST WINDSOR: Monroe woman dies after SUV strikes her outside Shoprite

On Thursday a pedestrian from Monroe was killed after being hit by a vehicle 1:07 p.m. at the parking lot of Shoprite, 319 Route 130 North.

EAST WINDSOR — On Thursday a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a vehicle 1:07 p.m. at the parking lot of Shoprite, 319 Route 130 North.

            East Windsor police said that the preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Ford Explorer was being driven by Arthur Pittius Jr., 71, of Tunik Flower Lane, West Windsor, in the Shoprite parking aisle traveling in the direction of the store when Mr. Pittius lost control of the vehicle.

            Police said the red Ford continued forward driving onto the pedestrian walkway and impacted Berthe S. Frey, 94, of 1 David Brainerd Drive, Monroe.

            After impacting the pedestrian, the Ford veered off the walkway and back toward the parking lot before impacting vehicle a blue 1999 Mitsubishi, driven by Anthony Reid, 48, of Dutch Neck Road, East Windsor.

            After impacting the rear of the Mitsubishi, the Ford subsequently impacted a third vehicle, a black 2006 Honda Civic driven by East Windsor resident Joyce Kostrzewa, 76, of Hickory Corner Road, before coming to rest in an adjacent aisle of the parking lot.

            The pedestrian was transported via ambulance to Capital Health System – Fuld Campus for leg and head injuries. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. June 5.

            No other injuries were reported.

            Responding authorities included the East Windsor Township Police Department, Capital Health Ambulance, Capital Health Paramedics, police said.

            The incident remains under investigation by East Windsor Police Department Traffic Safety Unit and Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team.
            No charges were filed as of press time.
