He says he’s interested in kids’ backpack program
Michael Goldberg of Nottingham Way, Hillsborough, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.
The FBN provides services to Somerset County residents through programs such as Aid for Friends, which delivers food to individuals who cannot travel. The FBN also supports food pantries, holiday dinners and other programs.
”I have volunteered at FBN for a number of years,” said Mr. Goldberg. “It never ceases to amaze me how many people give time, money and effort to help others who may not be as fortunate. As daily living in this economy has become more challenging, the needs of the community have grown and the FBN and its partners, such as the United Way and many other businesses, governmental agencies and individuals, have stepped up their efforts.”
Mr. Goldberg’s primary focus as a volunteer has been with the backpack program.
”This program provides school children with food, packed into gallon plastic bags that are delivered to the participating schools on Thursdays for distribution on Fridays,” he explains. “These food bags are placed directly into the children’s backpacks to be consumed over the weekend when other school-based programs are not available.”
The Back Pack Program delivers hundreds of these bags each week during the school year and continues as needed throughout the summer.
”One of my goals as a member of the board of the FBN is to increase awareness of this program, working with schools throughout the county,” said Mr. Goldberg. “We want to make sure it continues to receive the extraordinary support from volunteers and donors that allows it be an integral part of the overall services FBN provides to those in Somerset County who need assistance.”
