Locks of Love program grows at Amsterdam School
Participants at Amsterdam Elementary School donated more than 660 inches of hair for the Locks of Love foundation June 5.
The cause drew 66 participants who grew then gave their hair for children under the age of 21 who suffer from long-term hair loss. Locks of Love provides financially disadvantaged recipients with hairpieces. The students also raised $2,080 for the organization.
Amsterdam Elementary School has participated in Locks of Love for 10 years. Lisa Caudill, a fourth-grade teacher, who kickstarted the program at the elementary school, donated this year for the third time. Her husband, Brian Caudill, a physical education teacher, cut her hair.
High school senior Daria Grastara, a former student who watched Ms. Caudill donate 10 years ago, came to give up her tresses this year.
Locks of Love became a nonprofit organization in 1997, spearheaded by Madonna Coffman, a retired cardiac nurse. Ms. Coffman suffered from alopecia in her 20s. Years later, her 4-year-old daughter suffered from alopecia and lost all of her hair. Her daughter’s struggle inspired Ms. Coffman to become involved with Locks of Love fulltime.
