EDISON — An Edison police officer has been charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly consumed alcoholic beverages while on duty.

Mayor Antonia Ricigliano confirmed reports that Patrolman Alan Varady allegedly attended a party in the township during the afternoon of June 1, before being charged with DUI.

The details of the case are not yet available, as several phone calls to Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan went unreturned. An officer who works for the department said Bryan is the only person authorized to speak of the matter.

Ricigliano said she too had not been “fully briefed” on the events.

“I’m still waiting for a conversation with the chief of police,” Ricigliano said. “I want to know where the police supervision was while one of our officers was [allegedly] drinking at a party.”

Ricigliano said the department has strict drug and alcohol rules that she takes seriously as the director of public safety.

“Having said that, I’m deeply troubled by this event. I have demanded a full accounting by our division of police, and I’m especially concerned about the actions from some of our supervisors and command staff,” the mayor added.
