The South Brunswick 14U Lady Vikings travel softball team opened their summer season by going 5-0 and capturing the championship in the USSSA Memorial Day Classic in Medford, Burlington County.
On June 1, the Lady Vikings beat the South Jersey Diamond Divas, Diamond State Rampage, and Lacy Storm.
On June 2, the Lady Vikings rolled to the championship by beating the Diamond Divas 11-1 and the Vineland Tsumami 9-0.
Pitching and defense were in top form for the Lady Vikings, as they allowed only five runs all weekend.
Serena Ruggiero and Kate Mastro anchored the outfield defense and provided multiple run-stopping catches.
Haley Grossi, Emily Collins and Julie Kurkela led the near flawless infield, while Melissa Scaletti and Jessica Risch handled the catching duties and kept opposing base runners at bay.
Nicole DeKok, Carly Leach, and Haley Grossi provided the consistently strong pitching efforts all weekend.
Jaime Klemas, Samantha Knehr, and Sydney Cortez each batted over .500 for the weekend with extra base hits to lead the team’s offensive efforts.
As was the case during last year’s successful season, this tournament victory was a true team effort, with each player making significant contributions throughout the weekend.
The 14U Lady Vikings have five more tournaments scheduled this summer, starting with the Roxbury Runnin’ with the Rebels tournament during Father’s Day Weekend and ending with the South Brunswick Sid Lee Viking Classic from July 19-21st at Reichler Park.
