Boys State is a mythical 51st state organized and administered for citizenship training purposes under the auspices of the American Legion. More than 900 boys from all over the state will be participating.
The three students were selected to attend based on their outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service to their school and community.
Past attendees include U.S. Representatives Leonard Lance and John Adler, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, State Assemblyman Herb Conaway and former State Sen. Bill Baroni, who both served as Boys State governors.
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students, according to the organization.
It is a participatory program where each attendee becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government.
At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen.
The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, and recreational programs.
High school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts to attend the program. The sponsoring American Legion Post pays all expenses associated with attending this program.
